Foreign qualifications and degrees:

About qualifications recognition

Recognition of foreign educational qualifications in Croatia is carried out for the purpose of continuation of education at Croatian higher education institutions (academic recognition) or for the purpose of employment in Croatia (professional recognition).

All higher education institutions that accept international students usually have an International Cooperation Office and prospective students should contact that office well before applying in order to obtain relevant information on what educational qualifications need to be recognised in order to apply for the study programme in question.

After students have completed their degrees (or exchange programmes) in Croatia, the same process of recognition takes place in the students’ country of origin.

Recognition of secondary school qualifications

Prospective applicants to undergraduate study programmes in Croatia who hold foreign secondary school diploma from general, gymnasium and art secondary schools submit requests for recognition of their educational qualifications to the Education and Teacher Training Agency.

Prospective applicants to undergraduate study programmes in Croatia who hold foreign secondary school diploma from vocational secondary schools submit requests for recognition of their educational qualifications to the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education.

Recognition of higher education qualifications for the purpose of continuation of education

Prospective students who wish to apply for graduate or postgraduate study programmes and have a foreign higher education qualification or degree, will need to undergo the process of academic recognition for the purpose of continuation of education in Croatia, which is performed by Croatian higher education institutions.

Academic recognition

Prospective students who wish to apply for graduate or postgraduate study programmes and have a foreign higher education qualification or degree, will need to undergo the process of academic recognition. Academic recognition for the purpose of continuation of higher education on graduate or postgraduate study programmes in Croatia is performed by Offices for Academic Recognition of Foreign Higher Education Qualifications at Croatian higher education institutions.

Prospective students who apply for exchange programmes usually do not need to have their previous educational qualifications recognised. An agreement between partner higher education institutions or the competition for the exchange programme prescribes the precise admissions requirements for exchange students.

University bilateral agreements

Most Croatian higher education institutions have a significant number of bilateral agreements (30 to 90 per higher education institution) with foreign higher education institutions. The agreements, which are mutually coordinated and signed, support the following general forms of cooperation:

University bilateral agreements
Student and faculty exchange
Exchange of administrative and professional staff
Joint organisation of courses, study tours, conferences and seminars
Participation in scientific conferences, symposia and seminars
Joint research projects, including applications for governmental and foundation funding
Exchange of experience and information on syllabi, methodology of teaching and techniques applied to didactic process
Exchange of scientific publications
Other forms of cooperation of mutual interest.
